Chemicals

'Chemicals' is a broad term encompassing different substances and preparations with unique properties. Hazardous chemicals display certain characteristics. They may be inflammable, corrosive, or poisonous, with the potential to harm the environment if allowed to escape from controlled conditions.
Chemicals should be kept away from water courses when stored and used, and should never be disposed of via drains.
Garden chemicals should not be used in windy conditions or before heavy rain to avoid run-off.

Our recycling / disposal advice
When applying any chemicals such as fertilizers follow the instructions on the manufacturer's label and prepare only the amount required, thus avoiding the need to dispose of any surplus.
An entire product should be used before its container is disposed of and consumers should not purchase more than they need.
Store the substance in its original packaging, and keep the label (for easy identification).
Generally Hertfordshire County Council does not collect chemicals, but will be able to advise residents on disposal of small amounts of household chemicals if you can give us some details. Ring the WasteAware helpline on 08457 425000.
The WasteAware helpline does not, however, give technical advice other than on the disposal of chemicals. For specific information on matters such as the use of chemicals, contact the Environmental Health Officer at the District/Borough Council.
