Pesticides

Pesticides

'Pesticide' is a general term used for any chemical that is designed to kill, control or diminish insects, weeds and diseases that threaten people, their crops, their domestic animals or their environment.
Although many of these chemicals' components may be toxic in high concentrations, the weak and dilute formulations of garden chemicals present a low risk. Modern products are designed for safe use by amateur gardeners and have to comply with strict requirements before they can be licensed for sale.

Our recycling / disposal advice

Where appropriate, householders should use up the product themselves, for the purpose for which it was designed.
Unwanted material can be given to a neighbour but not if it is beyond its shelf-life, or where it is not in the original container, or where instructions for use have been obscured or are illegible.
Waste garden chemicals are not generally suitable for recycling.

Advice to householders on the management of garden chemicals not suitable for use is that small quantities (e.g. less than 125 ml) can be diluted and sprayed onto bare soil or gravel paths/drives (Source: NHHWF)
Garden chemicals should not be disposed of by householders down sinks, drains or lavatories or into water courses and ditches.

For further advice on the disposal of pesticides contact the WasteAware helpline.

The WasteAware helpline does not, however, give technical advice other than on the disposal of pesticides. For specific information on things like the use of pesticides, contact the Environmental Health Officer at the District/Borough Council.
