Fridges and Freezers

Fridges and Freezers

Fridges and freezers contain CFCs which are Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) and are potentially damaging to the atmosphere.
As a result of recent legislation, fridges and freezers can no longer be landfilled and must have the ODS removed before some of the other materials are recycled.

Fridges and freezers that are still working may be able to be passed on to a re-use scheme. If you have an item of furniture that you do not need any more, but is also in good condition, why not donate it to your local furniture re-use group? When you donate an item, you will be helping a project which supports somebody who is living on benefits or low wages, or needs emergency support.

You can find out about your nearest re-use organisations here, and see if you can organise for your furniture to be collected from your home.

Re-using your household items will save a significant amount of energy compared to disposal, and also less energy than recycling, as even reprocessing materials will require energy.

Our recycling / disposal advice

Household fridges and freezers can be taken to Household Waste Recycling Centres. From here they are taken off site for degassing. This involves the coolant gases (CFCs) being removed and stored by a specialist for recycling. The fridges and freezers are either re-used or some of the materials are recycled.

Place the fridge / freezer in the allocated area of the Household Waste Recycling Centre. If you are unsure where to put the unit please ask the site operative.
