Japanese Knotweed

Japanese Knotweed

Japanese Knotweed was introduced to the UK as an ornamental plant during the 1800s. It is commonly found today along railway lines, riverbanks, roads and footpaths, in graveyards, and on derelict sites.

Because Japanese Knotweed does not originate in the UK, it does not compete fairly with our native species and is able to spread unchecked. Once established, Japanese Knotweed shades out native plants by producing a dense canopy of leaves early in the growing season. Although Japanese Knotweed is not toxic to humans, animals or other plants, it offers a poor habitat for native insects, birds and mammals.

Due to its invasive nature the Wildlife and Countryside Act has made it illegal to spread Japanese knotweed.

Our recycling / disposal advice

To prevent the spread of the plant, do not mow or flail Japanese knotweed.

Japanese Knotweed cannot be composted. You should contact the Environment Agency as there is specific guidance available on how to manage Japanese Knotweed.

This can be accessed here. Alternatively, their telephone number is 08708 506 506.
