Compost Awareness Week 2nd - 8th May 2010

The tenth annual international Compost Awareness Week will be held from Sunday 2nd to Saturday 8th May 2010. WasteAware is getting its residents involved by promoting the benefits of home composting and encouraging them to have a go.
During the week WasteAware plans to stage a series of composting events with the aim of highlighting the great environmental benefits of home composting.
Duncan Jones, the Hertfordshire Waste Partnership Development Manager, said, “More than 30% of the average household bin can be composted and although around one third of householders already compost at home, we are encouraging others to get involved. Home composting saves money, saves energy, saves water and provides free garden compost year after year. By converting material that is considered rubbish into a valuable resource, nutrients are recycled back into the soil.
UK households in England throw away around 4 million tonnes of waste every year that could have been composted. There is often a belief that waste such as vegetable peelings or garden waste is harmless, but in a landfill site they cause powerful greenhouse gases to be released into the atmosphere. Home composting organic waste materials not only helps to significantly reduce emissions, but can also be used as an effective and sustainable waste management method to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill."

Through the Hertfordshire Waste Partnership, householders can purchase home compost bins for as little as £14 for the 220 litre model and £17 for a larger 330 litre version (plus £5 delivery costs).
