Babies are doing their bit!

Hertfordshire babies helped to keep more than one and a half million nappies out of landfill sites last year by using real cotton nappies instead of disposable ones.

In April 2004, the Hertfordshire WasteAware Partnership launched a cashback scheme enabling parents in the county who bought re-usable nappies to apply for up to £40 cashback for their purchase. Last year over 400 people took up the offer and opted to use real nappies.

From birth to potty a baby could use 4000 to 6000 disposable nappies costing between £488 and £732. By comparison you only need from 25-30 real nappies costing as little as £185 including the washing

'In Britain, eight million nappies get thrown away each day. They could take centuries to degrade adding great pressure on our landfill sites, which are already running out of capacity,' said County Councillor Stuart Pile, Executive Member for Transportation and Environment.

Some companies offer loan schemes, giving parents a chance to try some of the different types of re-usable nappies on offer. More information can be found here on our nappies page.
