Elstree recycling centre to close for five days in September

The Elstree Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) will close for five days from Monday, 12 September while essential resurfacing works are carried out.
From 12 to 16 September, residents who wish to recycle or dispose of their household waste should instead visit their nearest operational HWRC located either in Waterdale (Garston) or Potters Bar.
The resurfacing is necessary because the large compactor machines located in the centre of the site are being removed as they are very old and no longer cost effective. Their removal means that a new layout is necessary to improve accessibility and capacity at the site.
Derrick Ashley, Executive Member for Transformation, Performance and Waste Management, said: “Historically, the compactors, which reduce the volume of waste, were used for residual waste and green waste. However, due to the age of the machines, the cost of maintenance is prohibitive, so they are no longer cost effective.
“Following this short closure, the revised layout at the Elstree HWRC will be much improved with better traffic management arrangements.”
