WasteAware have joined the Glove Love reuse campaign currently being run by Green Thing, a non profit making public service organisation who aim to inspire people to lead a greener life.

The idea is to take lost gloves that people have found, or spare gloves where the matching one has got lost, wash and repair them, match them up with a glove of a similar material and size (but with clashing/contrasting colour or pattern), and sell the new pairs at £5 per pair. Green Thing will add labels to make the gloves a proper pair, and include the story of the gloves' origins to their new owner.

Cllr Derrick Ashley, Executive Member for Waste says 'Hertfordshire Waste Partnership is proud to support this initiative as part of our commitment to sustainability and reducing waste. Glove Love is a reminder that almost everything can be reused or recycled. By finding creative ways to reuse things that might otherwise be thrown away, we can all do our part to protect the environment.'

Naresh Ramchandani, co-founder of Green Thing, said: 'It's the age old scenario when you root through your wardrobe as winter closes in only to find you have one solitary glove. Glove Love is about finding a sustainable solution to this problem but at the same time making green living simple and fun. The donations of single gloves so far have been fantastic and we're still appealing for more.'

WasteAware will be placing drop off boxes for lonely single gloves at locations across the county from 1 December 2010 to 28 February 2011.

We hope to encourage everyone to get involved. This is a charming seasonal way to encourage people to recycle, buy sustainable goods, and not throw things away because no longer a pair! This is turn saves landfill space, and saves people from having to buy new.
