Local schools recycling banner launches new look recycling centre

rickmansworth hwrc

This feature was added on 27th March 2008

The bright ideas of school children from Rickmansworth inspired a local artist to create a number of different recycling characters for the official opening of the refurbished Rickmansworth Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC), which is now bigger and better than ever before.

The characters feature on a 60 metre banner designed by artist Pam Storey Johnson based on the ideas of children aged five and six from four local schools – St Mary’s Primary School in Stockers Farm Road, St Peter’s Primary School, Church Lane, St John’s Primary School, Berry Lane and Arnett Hills Primary School, Berry Lane. The eye-catching banner highlights just how many different materials residents can recycle at the site, from glass bottles and cans to tyres and mobile phones.

Pam, of Redbourn, who worked with the children before bringing their ideas to life, said: ”The children had some really good ideas, including a number of characters made up of different recyclable materials, and I was also really impressed by their attitude to recycling. As a result I have personally become much more aware of the importance of recycling and I think the children will be taking their enthusiasm for recycling home which is great for the future.”

The new site has 22 containers for general and green waste as well for the recycling of a wide range of materials including cardboard, wood, scrap metal, paper, glass and plastic bottles, textiles, cans and foil.

One of the key advantages of the re-developed site will be the increased parking capacity with space provided for 33 cars - a third bigger than the previous site - enabling members of the public to off-load bulky items more easily. There will also be waiting space within the site for another 15 reducing queues on the highway.

Derrick Ashley, Executive Member for Planning, External Relations and Waste at Hertfordshire County Council, said: “The new centre offers all the same services that people are getting already, but it’s considerably larger than the original recycling centre, which means more room for parking with less queuing outside on the road. We have also introduced longer opening hours giving people more flexibility in their use of these improved facilities.”
