Real Nappy cashback offer increases to £50

Pile of nappies with a sleeping baby on top

This feature was added on 23rd April 2010

To mark Real Nappy Week (26 April – 2 May 2010) the Hertfordshire Waste Partnership is increasing their Real Nappy Cashback offer to £50.

In the early years a baby will get through an astounding 5,000 disposable nappies, costing the parents approximately £700. In the UK almost 3 billion used disposable nappies are sent to landfill each year.

The Hertfordshire Waste Partnership is operating the Real Nappy Cashback Scheme in order to encourage parents to use re-useable nappies. Parents using re-useable nappies, or a nappy laundering service for their children, need to complete a coupon in order to claim cash back through the scheme. The amount of cash reimbursement will vary according to the District or Borough which they live, but will now be a minimum of £50 on production of the original receipt which must include the name of the company and the product purchased, together with a copy of your child’s birth certificate.

If you are on a budget, why not try as an alternative to buying pre-made cloth nappies, sewing your own nappies at home. This may be a good option if you have a sewing machine, as patterns are now available. The nappies can be made in half an hour from old towels, t-shirts and fleece sweaters. You can also buy a specialist water proof fabric (called PUL) to create nappy wraps or all-in-one nappies, which can be adjusted to fit your baby to avoid leaks.

Duncan Jones, Partnership Development Manager for Hertfordshire Waste Partnership said, “Re-usable nappies are, in comparison, more environmentally sound than disposable nappies as they are made from cloth and can be used over and over again. Using re-usable nappies means that the amount of waste that is sent to landfill is reduced. Re-usable nappies also generally offer a less expensive option for parents in the long run.”
