Jennie, the Council's Environmental Projects Officer at the District Council in Hertfordshire, beat off stiff competition to win the accolade for her work over the past year encouraging residents to recycle and reduce their waste. The prestigious nationwide awards, now in their eighth year, receive hundreds of nominations from across the country.

Since Jennie began working for the District Council in 2003, the district's recycling rate has more than doubled from 19% to 40% - the highest rate in Hertfordshire and one of the highest in the country. Jennie's work involves ensuring that all residents are kept informed about what they can recycle through the Council's collections, and how they can reduce even further the amount of rubbish thrown away. She regularly visits schools to talk to the district's younger residents about recycling and how they can help their local environment, and talks to people at 'recycling roadshows' across the district and other events to answer questions.

In addition, Jennie runs the Council's award-winning real nappy incentive scheme, which offers families cashback for using real nappies instead of disposables, and was closely involved in the successful introduction of the Council's 'brown bin' scheme for every household, for compostable and garden waste. Jennie said:

'I was really thrilled to win the award, especially as all the other finalists have clearly done a lot of similar work in promoting recycling and waste prevention issues. I work in a fantastic team at Three Rivers, all of whom have worked incredibly hard over the last few years at implementing various schemes and communicating with the public on a daily basis. The awards ceremony was a great night and I am pleased to have received external recognition for the work that I do.'

The award judges were full of praise for Jennie's hard work. The judges panel said:

'Jennie has been involved in an extremely wide range of projects and lots of new initiatives. She gets up at the crack of dawn with the crews, she's involved with the residents, she's out there and she's in your face.'
