Waste messages get schools acting up

Play performers

This feature was added on 2nd March 2010

WasteAware is getting important waste reduction messages out to students by putting together a special theatrical performance around 30 Hertfordshire schools.

The tour runs from March 1 until March 19 with a showcase performance on March 19 at 1.30pm at the Campus West Theatre in Welwyn Garden City.

Derrick Ashley, Executive Member for Waste and Chairman of the Hertfordshire Waste Partnership, said: "This bespoke production has been designed to raise awareness of the issues around food waste, with a particular focus on how to reduce the amount we produce.

"Our messages about recycling are clearly getting through, but recycling is only one way of tackling waste. Reducing the amount of food waste we generate not only helps the environment, but saves money as well. We hope the students will enjoy the performance and take home some useful messages to their families about minimising waste."

Designed for Year 7 and 8 students, the play performed by ImpAct Universal Limited features a food rap, a take off of Ready Steady Cook, a food version of Family Fortunes, a Dr Who episode taking the characters forward and back in time to investigate food waste issues, and an appearance by The Simpsons.

After they have seen the play, students will take part in an interactive workshop where they will be encouraged to compile a recipe book for entry into this year's WasteAware competition for schools. You can find out more about the competition here.

ImpAct have also provided a dedicated website www.wiseuptowaste.co.uk to suggest some handy hints on how to make food go further and to give ideas for “rescue recipes”. Remember, don’t be a “Waster” – Cook It, Don’t Chuck It!
