More than half the schools in the county are ready to start composting their organic waste this Spring with some help from WasteAware and a free Blackwall composter.

WasteAware joined forces with Blackwall to offer every school in Hertfordshire, apart from those which received one last year, a free composter. Ninety-eight schools have taken up the offer this year which brings the total number of schools composting to 268.

"It's encouraging to see so many schools taking up this offer and helping to reduce the amount of waste that is sent to landfill," said County Councillor Stuart Pile, Executive Member for Transportation and Environment.

"Although organic waste can be composted all year-round, March is the best time to start composting so we wanted to ensure as many schools as possible had the chance to get prepared in good time for spring."

Composting not only helps the environment but also makes an excellent soil conditioner so has an added benefit if used in the garden.

Although the offer of a free composter has now ended for this year, WasteAware is still offering pupils and their parents a composter for £7* instead of the recommended retail price of £39.95. Blackwall will then donate £1 to the school for every composter purchased through them in this way. Schools can also purchase two composters at a subsidised price of £7.
