Will your spring clean be WasteAware?

We tend to be a nation of hoarders, and spring is often the time we choose to tidy our homes and organise our belongings. But, WasteAware urge you to think twice before throwing away the household waste you generate when spring cleaning.
The Hertfordshire WasteAware Partnership of councils is encouraging Hertfordshire residents to remember to re-use and recycle whilst de-cluttering your homes.
When clearing out things you no longer use or need, by giving your houses a thorough clean, traditionally many items get thrown away when actually they could be re-used or recycled. Many items can be recycled through kerbside collections or taken to one of the nineteen household waste recycling centres in the county which collect seventeen different materials. Materials collected at these centres include textiles, cardboard, domestic batteries, toner cartridges, scrap metal, wood, and plastic bottles.
Contact your local district council who may provide a bulky item collection. If you can transport bulky items to a household waste recycling centre yourself they can also be disposed of there free of charge. Remember that many items can be taken to charity shops for resale too.
Some hints and tips from WasteAware:
- Set a realistic target for your spring cleaning about how much can be achieved - trying to do too much can be de-motivating.
- Try to visit a household waste recycling centre off peak if at all possible at this busy time of year – avoiding evenings and weekends.
- For fast and effective use of the household waste recycling centres please separate your load into different material types before reaching the centre.
