Plasterboard

***From 1st April 2009, new legislation means that plasterboard (and any other gypsum-based material) must NOT be sent to landfill, and should be recycled. This means that householders can only dispose of plasterboard at those household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) able to recycle it.
Hertfordshire County Council provides a recycling service for plasterboard at 10 HWRCs across the county. Please be aware that those sites not accepting plasterboard for recycling cannot accept it from residents in any form at all, so please do not attempt to dispose of this material at such sites.***
The HWRCs where plasterboard can be recycled are in: Turnford, Hemel Hempstead, Ware, Potters Bar, Letchworth, Royston, Harpenden, Stevenage, Rickmansworth and Waterdale (Garston).
As much as three million tonnes of plasterboard are used in construction works every year.
Please be aware that plasterboard is classified as construction and demolition waste, and can only be taken to a HWRC in limited quantities. Please refer to our construction and demolition guidance for more details.
If you are a business, you can search the Waste & Resources Action Programme's Plasterboard Recycler Directory for information on companies able to recycle your plasterboard. Businesses cannot take waste to a HWRC.
