Cardboard

Our recycling / disposal advice

All Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) in Hertfordshire collect cardboard for recycling.

Most types of cardboard are accepted at HWRCs except egg boxes and drinks cartons. Egg boxes are a low grade of card that would contaminate the end recycled product. However, if ripped up, they can easily be incorporated in a home composter. Drinks cartons cannot go in the cardboard container as they are a composite material - 25% of the material is made of aluminium foil and polyethylene.

Cardboard for collection therefore includes corrugated cardboard boxes, cardboard packaging, and toilet/kitchen roll cardboard tubes. Cardboard packaging with food residues cannot be deposited in the containers as it will contaminate the load.

Please flatten all cardboard packaging before putting it into the designated container.

Christmas card and paper waste: Christmas cards can be put in the cardboard containers too (but not cards decorated with glitter, tinsel or a plastic layer). Wrapping paper can also go in the cardboard banks but not shiny foil wrapping. Ideally ribbons/bows/glittery bits etc and sellotape must be kept to a minimum.

There are also some district/borough recycling points that recycle cardboard. Use the search to find the nearest one to you.
